Driven by the need to offer new, exciting services in a highly competitive environment, Cable TV operators which have traditionally used closed, proprietary transport systems are migrating towards an open, IP based video distribution home network. In many regions of the world, Cable operators trying to penetrate new territories discover that in-home Coax infrastructure is often scarce. Even in those regions where Coax is abundant, Cable operators are enhancing the coax-based infrastructure with Wi-Fi home networking to extend streaming of linear TV and stored DVR content to rooms and areas of the house which do not have coax sockets and to portable screen and mobile laptops.

• Linear TV and VoD – streaming incoming video from a central QAM-IP set top box to multiple thin IP set top boxes located in areas of the house that do not have access to Coax sockets.
• Multi-Room DVR – streaming content stored on the master QAM-IP DVR to multiple slave set top boxes around the house for time-shifted and place-shifted viewing.
